Hair to slay

Mickella Anderson YOUTHLINK WRITER

A wise guy once said there are two most important days in a young lady’s life – the day she gets married and the day she goes to prom! Okay, maybe that isn’t a direct quote from any great philosopher but when it comes to ball night, we’re pretty sure the occasion is ranked right up there on the list of ‘big days’ for us girls! It’s that one night when all your Is have to be dotted and your Ts crossed, from the crown of your head to the sole of your feet. The new rave within the beauty industry is the lace wig. This is convenient for everyone, the technique used to install the wig may differ, depending on the period of time that the wig will be worn. For a temporary wear on a special occasion, the elastic band is used for security. However, for a longer period of time, there are special adhesives used for additional security. In this edition of #CountdownToBall, we take a look at some trendy hairstyles to seal the deal on that unforgettable night you’ve been picturing.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Hairstylist Racquel Lee says, “The fundamental of any hairstyle begins with clean, healthy hair and scalp. Like a bride, selecting hairstyles for prom warrants a variety of factors being considered.” According to Lee, you must consider for how long the style will be worn, which will influence the technique used to achieve it. To be on the safer side, we recommend that last-minute do, which will ensure you are giving the full fresh-out-of-the-salon look on ball night, minus any staleness of an overnight bonnet. But, since this is not always possible, Lee says you are to choose a style based on what your situation is. Another factor to consider is the design of the dress. Some dresses offer a deeper neckline, which gives your hair more work to do to make up for bare shoulders and chest. Meanwhile, other gowns may already be so grand that the hair needs not be extravagant. Remember, your entire look must coordinate.

Also, according to Lee, consideration must be given to the hair accessories you will be wearing, as well as your face shape and body type. Accessorise based on your outfit, of course; and we all know, as ladies, that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it. Therefore, choose hairstyles that are unique to your features and not because Beyoncé rocked it in her latest video.

ACHIEVING THE STYLE

Natural hair is in, and there are plenty of styles that are suited just for the naturalistas. Lee mentions the full head weave with a crochet closure, which can be considered a protective style.

She says, “The type of hair used is also easy to maintain while giving that glamorous look. A moisturiser and a detangler can be used to enhance or maintain the natural curl patterns.”

Natural hair is also perfect for achieving gorgeous hairstyles with the incorporation of braids and hair accessories such as the braided Mohawk.

For processed hair and generally any hair type, “The new rave within the beauty industry is the lace wig,” Lee points out. “This look is convenient for everyone, although the technique used to install the wig may differ, depending on the period of time that the wig will be worn.” She says, “For a temporary wear on a special occasion like a ball, the elastic band is used for security. However, for a longer period of time, there are special adhesives used for additional security.”

Each individual will be different in terms of how how she will be able to pull off certain looks. Therefore, Lee recommends, “Changing the way the hair is parted and choosing how the hair frames the face can make a major difference.”
