A lecturer is an academic expert who teaches on a full-time or part-time basis in a particular area of expertise, usually at a university, college or other tertiary-level institution and usually to adult students. Lecturers are characterised by professional competence and high levels of qualifications in the fields of their specialisation and research areas. A lecturer is also expected to show the skills, willingness and desire to pursue constant self education through research, reading and publications, and also to contribute to the personal development of students.
WHAT THE WORK INVOLVES?
A typical day for a lecturer might involve:
• Preparing course materials and teaching classes to graduate and/or under-graduate students.
• Conducting research.
• Grading, reviewing and evaluating course assignments in order to evaluate students and their academic progress.
• Participating in faculty meetings, with students and colleagues.
• Developing curriculum and programme planning, including designing, revising and updating coursework.
• Advising students regarding coursework, time management and assignments.
• Participating in departmental activities.
• Providing academic counseling to students.
A lecturer can expect to spend a lot of time in a classroom or lecture theatre conducting lectures. As a lecturer, you may work anywhere from nine-12 hours a week teaching classes, in addition to preparation for class.
WHO IS THIS CAREER FOR?
As a lecturer, you have to be creative and open, as you are interacting with a vast population of people, some who are from different backgrounds and sometimes from different countries and who speak a different language. Having excellent interactive skills and true commitment to your students’ progress and development are definite pluses.
WHAT CAN I EARN?
As a lecturer, you can earn a mid-range salary level. Salaries may vary in different institutions. If you move up the ladder, take on more responsibilities, become a department head or earn the title of professor, then a higher range salary will follow.
HOW DO I QUALIFY?
To become a lecturer, you will need to have a higher degree, experience and expertise for the subject area in which you wish to lecture.
