More than 6,000 first yearstudents were welcomed to the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies during orientation activities at the institution on Thursday, August 23,and Friday, August 24.

The students were provided with relevant information on a range of topics, including security, budgeting and healthcare, during the two-day exercise.

Director of security at UWI, Mona, retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Keith Gardener, cautioned the students to take their personal security seriously. He advised them to be aware and alert of their surroundings and, if possible, to use the buddy system and avoid walking alone, especially after dark.

Mr Gardener also told the firstyear students to pay close attention to their valuables, including cell phones, computers and iPads. “Be cautious of individuals who may approach you and ask to borrow your cell phone or other electronic equipment. Do not give anyone your phone to make a call unless they are your close friends. Volunteer to make the call and pass on the information to them,” he cautioned.

The students were also provided with advice on managing their finances and establishing a budget by the head of sales support at JN Bank, Warren Wilson. He told them that in prioritising their expenses, they must ensure that books, food, rent and fees are at the top of the list.

“Be very careful about spending frivolously on items such as fast food, telephone credit and entertainment,” he said.

Mr Wilson also encouraged the students to save, “no matter how small the amount may be”.

They were also treated to a surprise performance by popular gospel artiste Kevin Downswell, who rocked the house with wellknown hits such as Goodbye World, You Make Me Stronger and If It’s Not You.
