My
life: Stacious
Biko
Kennedy, Youthlink Writer
You
may know Stacy 'Stacious' Scarlett as that
girl with the curvaceous frame who's the
first lady of the Gully Squad. Or, maybe
you've listened to her smash single, Come
Into My Room, featuring Mavado. You probably
have an idea that she is a straight-talking
DJ who isn't afraid to embrace the adage,
sex sells. But, how did she become the woman
she is today? To find out, Youthlink went
back to high school, analysed the past and
talked of future endeavours including romance.
Welcome
to high school
Youthlink
(YL): What was it like when you found out
you had passed for St Hugh's High School?
Stacious
(S): Well, upon my first attempt (when I
was nine) I failed and cried for hours,
but at age 11 when I passed for St Hugh's,
I wasn't that motivated to go there, 'cause
at the time Wolmer's Girls was the 'it'
school for me (lol).
YL:
Tell us about your high school experiences.
Any fights, bad grades or extortion?
S:
I didn't experience any extortion and I
only got bad grades because I think I didn't
apply myself as much as I should, but di
fight dem (lol)! I remember once I got into
a fight with a Meadowbrook girl. She thought
I had hit her when, in fact, I hadn't and
mi did affi defen it (lol). Another fight
that I recall vividly is one with this boy
who slapped me on my butt and I totally
hate that up to this day!
YL:
When you entered seventh grade, were you
looking towards finding a niche or did you
just want to fit in?
S:
I really just wanted to fit in, even though
I stood out as a very talkative person (lol).
Looking
back
YL:
If you could change one thing about your
experience at St Hugh's, what would it be?
S:
I'd love to have gone to my graduation.
I was asked not to attend because of an
incident that took place, in which I wasn't
involved.
YL:
Were you disappointed with your CXC passes?
S:
(Sigh) I wouldn't say I was disappointed
because I knew that I wasn't as settled
as I should have been, especially in maths
(lol). I just wished that I had applied
myself more and kept focus. I got a IV in
it, an' bwoy, I was just playing 'eenie
meenie mynie mo' in the exam (lol).
The
birth of Stacious
YL:
Acting was your first love, what caused
that relationship to end?
S:
Really, the money (lol), because in Jamaica
acting primarily focuses on plays and I
saw myself on the movie scene so that was
that (lol).
YL:
Why do you think female dancehall artistes
are often underestimated?
S:
I'd have to say because they tend to go
for cliché lyrics, such as who hotta
dan who and who look pop dung from who doesn't
and, quite frankly, the industry is tired
of that!
YL:
What advice would you offer to students
who are about to enter a new school and
partake in a new experience?
S:
Try and apply yourself to the fullest and
never say you can't attain any goal!
A
lover and friend
YL:
If someone were to give you one gift, what
would you want to receive and why?
S:
MONEY (lol) to start up my business. I really
intend to open a diner similar to those
in New York, because after going clubbing
and all, there's really nowhere for people
to enjoy food and just chill. I don't want
anyone stealing ma idea now enuh (lol).
YL:
Describe an activity that you consider truly
romantic.
S:
Having a heart-to-heart conversation, whether
it is over a candle-lit dinner or just sitting
on the sofa, that really means a lot to
me.
YL:
If you were to write a love note to your
sweetheart, what would it say?
S:
(lol) Baby, I truly do love you. Let's always
be honest with each other no matter what,
and remember that I'm not just your lover,
but also your best friend.
