Dollars and sense

Special Summer Edition
Jamila Litchmore, Youthlink Writer

Summer seems to be everyone's favourite time of year. Although I don't know why, the days seem unending and the heat (and the people) unbearable. The only thing I see this summer bringing is more issues to ponder and evaluate. In this section I appraise in dollar value, things that do and do not make sense about summer trends, events and activities. If an issue is of great importance to me, I value it at $500 with every subsequent issue decreasing in value.

$500

We speak english too

I consider Patios a language and yes, I do speak English also. That, however, does not mean I was not born in Jamaica, I travel a lot or that I'm living 'comfortably'. We are Jamaican and we should know better than to believe foreign misconceptions.

$100

Catch my catchphrase

Artistes can be attributed to the catchphrases they use and while we can stand to hear some of them repeated, others should meet a quick death. For instance, if your catchphrase includes some words that don't exist or a sound without any actual syllables, it is likely to fall under the category of ridiculous. Do your pride a favour and retire it quickly!

$50

A season for reason

Hooded sweaters are perhaps the most dominant fashion trend of our time (that and the ultra skinny jeans). However, I felt it important to point out that unless getting a heatstroke or a horrible heat rash is on your to-do list for summer, long-sleeve 'hoodies' may not be the best choice. If hooded shirts are a fashion must-have for your wardrobe, try ones with short sleeves. They give the same effect without half the discomfort.

$20

A strange case of amnesia

"I can't remember exactly what happened" is a rather popular statement this summer, especially after a night on the town. However, unless you were hit over the head, lost memories aren't cute, especially when everyone seems to know what you did this summer, except you. If it's so difficult to keep track of everything you do this summer, don't be afraid to keep notes (unless you also forgot the fundamentals of penmanship).
